First, choose someone who really specialises in food photography.

Do not assume that every photographer can photograph food well. Food photography is very different from portrait, fashion, wedding, or landscape photography.

I have seen photographers who normally photograph people use the same method for food. The result can be very bad.

It is like cooking. Many chefs can cook well, but not every chef can do fine dining. You would not ask a chef who normally makes burgers to suddenly prepare fine dining and expect the same result.

The same idea applies to photography.

A good food photographer should understand food, lighting, styling, timing, kitchen workflow, and post-production.

Question 2

How can I tell if a food photographer is really experienced?

Look at the full portfolio, not only a few beautiful photos.

I want to see whether the photographer has worked with many different types of food, different cuisines, different lighting, and different styles.

If almost every photo has the same lighting, same angle, same background, and same mood, the photographer may only be good at one style.

But if your restaurant needs something different, the photographer may not be able to adapt.

For food photography, I actually prefer to see more variety in the portfolio. It usually shows stronger experience and better adaptability.

Not too much.

Google is still a good place to find photographers because you can see many websites, portfolios, and past work.

But being on the first page of Google does not mean that photographer is the best.

If you see Sponsored or Ad, it simply means the photographer paid for advertising.

It does not mean:

- best skill
- best portfolio
- best value
- or best choice for your restaurant

The same applies to social media.

Some photographers are very good at marketing themselves. That does not always mean they are the best photographers.

Photography awards can also be useful, but do not depend on them too much.

Many award-winning photos need a big budget, long production time, special props, complex lighting, and a full team.

That may be perfect for an advertising campaign, but not practical for a restaurant that needs to photograph 30 or 40 dishes.

For normal restaurant work, I care more about whether the photographer can give you good, usable photos within your real budget and time.

Food styling is very important because food that looks good on the dining table may not always look good in front of a camera.

A photographer with strong food styling knowledge should be able to guide the kitchen.

You may see prices from a few hundred ringgit to several thousand ringgit.

There is no simple fixed market price.

So do not only ask:

�Who is cheaper?�

Ask:

�What do I actually get for this price?�

For example, one photographer may charge RM800 and give you only 10 useful photos.

Another may charge RM1,500 and give you 30 good, finished photos that you can really use.

The cheaper quotation may not actually be cheaper.

I prefer to look at the real cost of each usable commercial photo.

That is a much better way to compare value.

Both methods can work, but both have risks.

If the photographer charges per photo, ask clearly:

�What exactly counts as one photo?�

For some photographers, one photo means one final edited image.

For others, the meaning may be very different.

In extreme cases, even one press of the shutter may be counted as one photo.

Also remember that per-photo pricing can create pressure to work too fast.

The faster the photographer finishes more photos, the more money they can make.

That does not mean every photographer will rush.

But food photography often needs a little extra time to adjust lighting, move garnish, clean the plate, fix sauce, or change the angle.

If everything is done too quickly, you may get many photos, but not many good photos.

If the photographer charges by time, ask how many good photos they can normally complete in one hour.

This helps you understand the real working speed and estimate your final budget.

What should I ask about a half-day or full-day package?

Two photographers may both work for four hours.

A professional photographer should check the final photos carefully and remove problems that should not be there.

Good retouching should not make the food look fake.

The best retouching is natural.

There is a big difference between simply delivering a photo and delivering a finished commercial photo.

What should I ask a food photographer before hiring them?

Pay attention to what the photographer asks you.

They should want to know things such as:

- where the photos will be used
- where the shoot will happen
- how much time is available
- what result you expect

The more carefully the photographer tries to understand your job, the more it shows that they are experienced and responsible.

If a photographer asks almost nothing and simply says, �Okay, I can come and shoot,� I would be careful.

It may mean they do not really plan to understand the job properly.

What risks should I watch for when hiring a very cheap or temporary photographer?

Very cheap photography is not always bad.

If someone can give good quality, proper service, and still charge a low price, that is fine.

But you should ask why the price is so low.

Sometimes low prices come from:

- no proper retouching

- or no long-term responsibility

You should also be careful with photographers who are only temporarily in Malaysia.

The problem is not whether the photographer is Malaysian or foreign.

The real question is:

Does the photographer have the legal right to accept paid commercial work in Malaysia?

If someone is in Malaysia on a tourist or short-term visit and does not have proper legal work permission, but is still taking paid photography jobs, I would be very careful.

You should also ask what happens after the shoot.

What if:

- you need more editing?
- some photos are missing?
- the quality is not what was promised?
- the photographer does not show up?
- you already paid a deposit and cannot contact them?

A photographer who has a long-term local business has much more to protect.

They need to protect:

- their name
- their business reputation
- their Google reputation
- their existing clients
- repeat business
- referrals
- after-sales service

If they do a bad job today, it can affect their business for many years.

That gives the client an extra level of protection.

So when choosing a food photographer, do not only compare the first price you see.

Look at the full value:

- Photo quality + number of usable photos + food styling skill + post-production + service + after-sales support + final total cost

That is the real value for money.
